Standard
$50The one to buy. Everything above this is convenience you can earn in game, and the stash is the only real pain point.
You start with the smallest secure container and the smallest stash. Both are upgradeable: the Alpha becomes a Beta or Gamma through quests and the Kappa through Collector, and the stash upgrades through the hideout. Nothing in the higher editions is locked away from you permanently.
Left Behind
$82Hard to justify. You pay 32 dollars for ten rows of stash and a small XP bonus, and the container is the same one Standard gets.
The jump from Standard buys you stash level 2 and a 7 percent raid XP bonus. It does not improve your secure container at all, which is the thing most new players actually feel.
Prepare for Escape
$110The sensible upgrade if you are going to buy one. The Beta container is the first meaningful quality of life jump.
Beta container, stash level 3, 9 percent XP, and increased starting standing with every trader, which pulls trader loyalty levels forward and matters more than it sounds. This is the point where paying more changes how the early game feels.
The Unheard
$250Only worth it if the Season Pass matters to you. The Gamma container and 20 percent XP are real, but 250 dollars is 250 dollars.
Maximum stash, the Gamma secure container, the largest XP bonus, increased trader standing, and a Season Pass covering future DLC. The Gamma is the headline: a 3x3 secure container changes what you can afford to lose in a raid.
Edge of Darkness
(No longer sold)You cannot buy this any more. If you own it you keep it, and anyone selling you an account with it is selling you a ban.
Edge of Darkness was the old top tier and was removed from sale. It carried the Gamma container, a 10x68 stash and increased trader standing. Account sales and account sharing are against the rules of the game and get both accounts banned, so treat any offer of an EOD account as a scam regardless of price.
What you can earn anyway
- •Secure container. Alpha upgrades to Beta and Gamma through quests, and Kappa comes from Collector. Every edition gets there eventually.
- •Stash. The Stash station upgrades to level 4 in the hideout no matter which edition you bought. Use the route planner on the hideout page to see what that costs from where you are.
- •Trader standing. A head start, not a permanent advantage. Loyalty levels come with play.
- •The XP bonus is the exception. It is permanent and you cannot earn it, but it changes how fast you level rather than what you can reach.
Once you have picked one, set it in Settings and your starting stash level is applied to the hideout tracker automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Escape from Tarkov edition should I buy?
Standard, unless you already know you want the Gamma container. Every advantage the higher editions give is something you can earn in game: the secure container upgrades through quests, the stash upgrades through the hideout, and trader standing comes with play. The only thing you cannot earn is the Season Pass on The Unheard.
Can I still buy Edge of Darkness?
No. Edge of Darkness was removed from sale and is not coming back. Anyone offering to sell you an account with it is offering something that will get the account banned, because account sales and sharing break the rules of the game.
Can I upgrade my edition later?
Yes. BSG sells edition upgrades from the same purchase page, so buying Standard now does not lock you out of the higher tiers later. You pay the difference rather than the full price again.
What does the secure container actually change?
Anything inside it survives your death. Alpha is 2x2, Beta 3x2 and Gamma 3x3, so a bigger container means you can extract more value from a raid you lose. It is the single most noticeable difference between the editions, more than the stash.
Does a bigger stash matter?
Early on, more than you would think, because you cannot sell fast enough to keep up with what you loot. It is also the easiest gap to close: the Stash station in the hideout upgrades to level 4 regardless of which edition you bought.
