Boreas
Follow a distress signal to the frozen icebreaker Boreas and uncover what Paradigm Shipping was really moving
Story Context
"A distress signal is coming from somewhere off the coast, and the paper trail points to Paradigm Shipping, a company with TerraGroup connections. Whatever the icebreaker Boreas was carrying, someone went to a lot of trouble to make sure it never reached port."
Required Items
Rewards
- Access to the Icebreaker and the Boreas evidence trail(story)
- SZ-1 explosive charge purchase at Prapor LL1(unlock)
Objectives
Start the chapter: obtain a Paradigm Shipping poster, or check the distress signal via the radio system at Intelligence Center level 3
Either pick up a Paradigm Shipping poster, or check the distress signal on the radio at Intelligence Center level 3.
Ask the traders about TerraGroup and Paradigm Shipping, or ask Mechanic where the distress signal came from
Mechanic, through the trader menu.
Locate and repair the equipment under the cellular tower on Woods (Toolset required), then report to Mechanic
Woods
At the Scav bunker on Woods. A Toolset is consumed by the repair, so bring a spare if you want to keep one.
Locate and obtain the Paradigm Shipping documentation, then tell Mechanic about Boreas
The Paradigm Shipping directive is in the warehouse at the freight yard in the north of Lighthouse, on the table next to the lamp.
Arrange transport to the icebreaker: hand the AMG-10 hydraulic fluid to Prapor. The extra cost depends on your Falling Skies case choice (nothing extra if you gave him the case; 3 found-in-raid Military power filters if you kept it; 30 kills on Reserve plus a yellow flare at the Woods transit if you never finished Falling Skies)
The AMG-10 hydraulic fluid is the quest-item version only; the barter item of the same name will not work. Six known spawns on Reserve: three in the northern storage area of the black bishop building basement (two on shelves, one on the pallet with the spotlight), and three at the parade ground helicopter (an open wooden crate inside, under the ladder inside, and beside the forklift behind it).
Find alternative transport: talk to the BTR Driver and complete his tasks (the exact tasks depend on your BTR quest history, up to burning Skier's reports on Customs and clearing smuggler territory)
Which tasks he sets depends on your BTR Driver history. Completed The Price of Independence and you simply return to the hideout. Completed Choose Your Friends Wisely and it is 200 rounds of 7.62x54mm R BT gzh, burning Skier's docs at a Customs fire barrel, and 15 kills at the smuggler bases. Neither one, and it is 10 kills at the smuggler bases. The smuggler bases are on Shoreline and Interchange.
Board the smuggler hovercraft on Shoreline. Optional but recommended: bring 400,000 roubles for the insertion, a green signal flare, and 2,500 euros for the evacuation
Shoreline
The hovercraft is at the Shoreline pier. The 400,000 roubles is the fare in; the green flare and euros are what get you back off the ship, so going without them means no way out.
Arrive at the icebreaker and check if any crew members survived
Icebreaker
The scientist is reached through the intercom on level 1, east side of the ship.
Access the engine room (optional: find the engine room keycard) and find a way into the superstructure
Icebreaker
The Boreas engine room keycard is in the centre medical room on level 1, beside an engineer's body, with three possible spawns on or around him. The door itself is on level 0, east side, next to the control room. Black Division ambush you from the catwalks halfway through the engine room.
Ask Mechanic and Prapor about explosives, then break the chained door on the engine room roof with the SZ-1 explosive charge (sold by Prapor LL1 once unlocked)
Icebreaker
Prapor starts selling the SZ-1 explosive charge (Icebreaker) at LL1 once you have asked both traders. The chained door is reached from the extraction zone: go two levels down, round the helipad, along the side of the ship, then up to level 3.
Enter the superstructure from the engine room roof. Warning: The Wedge squad holds the crew quarters and a teargas tripwire is rigged at the entrance door
Icebreaker
The Wedge squad holds the crew quarters, and the entrance door is trapped with a teargas tripwire.
Reach level 5, find the code-locked door to the upper decks, and ask the surviving scientist (intercom on level 1, east side) about the code
Icebreaker
The code-locked door is on level 5, outside the quarters and up the stairs. The scientist gives you half the code over the level 1 intercom.
Plant the hacking device in The Lab server room for the second code half (auto-completes if you already planted it in Blue Fire)
The Lab
Stashed next to the office chairs in The Lab server room on the first floor. Mechanic mails you one and barters more.
Use the access code, reach the upper decks, and thaw the frozen hatch on the bridge roof (a BBQ-S43 gas torch works)
Icebreaker
The code is 3-1-2-2-2-0. It never changes and it opens every exterior door in that zone. The BBQ-S43 gas torch is in the level 3 kitchen where The Wedge appears, with three spawns: a countertop by the lockers, a green crate on that countertop, or a wooden crate on a serving trolley.
Rescue the icebreaker captain
Icebreaker
Completes when you reach the captain's body on the bridge, level 9.
Access compartment C-1 and search the shelves, the workstation area, and the servers for the three hard drives
Icebreaker
Needs the Compartment C-1 keycard, found in the left hand of a body on level 9. The compartment is on level 7 next to the exterior exit. Three hard drives inside: on the shelves to the left as you enter, under the desk on the PC blocks, and on top of the servers on the floor.
Help Mechanic decode the drives: hand over 3 Ultralink satellite modules, 4 server RAM modules, and 2 cryptographic processors, all found in raid (all can be looted on the icebreaker)
3 Ultralink satellite communication modules, 4 Memento Server RAM Modules and 2 IBX Gigachad cryptographic processors, all found in raid. Handing over the three hard drives also unlocks the quests A Wedge Between Us, Fresh Stock, Oil Change and War Never Changes, none of which are required to continue.
Analyse the icebreaker data, inform the scientist about the captain, and arrange the evacuation with the BTR Driver
The Icebreaker archive data arrives by message and is read from the Handbook.
Assist the smugglers against the Rogues: eliminate 20 targets on the icebreaker and hand 5 respirators to the BTR Driver
Icebreaker
Assisting the smugglers means completing the quest Hangover. The BTR driver then wants 20 kills on the icebreaker, 5 respirators or gas masks, 2 class 5+ plates that fit the Kirasa-N, and a BNTI Kirasa-N body armor. None of them need to be found in raid. Finishing the chapter pays a Compartment C-3 keycard.
Boreas — Frequently Asked Questions
How do you start the Boreas chapter in Tarkov?
Two ways: find a Paradigm Shipping poster in raid, or build Intelligence Center level 3 and check the distress signal through its radio system. Either activates the chapter.
How do you get to the icebreaker?
Complete the transport arrangements with Prapor and the BTR Driver, then board the smuggler hovercraft on Shoreline. Bring 400,000 roubles for the insertion and 2,500 euros for the evacuation if you want the paid options, plus a green signal flare.
How do you open the chained door on the icebreaker?
Ask Mechanic and then Prapor about explosives, which unlocks the SZ-1 explosive charge at Prapor loyalty level 1. Place the charge on the chain of the damaged door on the engine room roof.
Does Boreas connect to the Blue Fire chapter?
Yes. Both chapters need the Local network hacking device planted in The Lab server room. Planting it in either chapter auto-completes the objective in the other, so you only make that Lab run once.
What is waiting inside the icebreaker superstructure?
The Wedge squad holds the crew quarters, and the entrance door is rigged with a teargas tripwire grenade. Clear them, then push to level 5 for the code-locked door to the upper decks.
